海神妈祖的传说。有一次，观音菩萨带龙女和善财，参加土母娘娘的蟠桃会后，各人踏着云雾，向普陀山走去，经过莆田嵋洲天顶时，有几股黑煞气，自海面直冲天顶。走在前头的龙女，拨开云雾一看：帽洲湾海面上，几只渔船沉落水，许多渔民落海底，海底几个妖怪正抢着人吃尸；岸上，许多媳娘,儿仔。有的哭老公，有的喊阿兄，十分凄惨。龙女看这场面后，心中不忍。其实观音在龙女拨开云雾偷看凡间的时候，屈指一算，知道是泥洲湾里有个海怪在捣乱，只因天机不可泄露，所以不跟龙女说。龙女对观音说：这些妖怪，扰害生灵，如果不除掉，将来害人不浅。请师父大发慈悲，救救众生。观音听了说：龙女啊，这是天机，你不必挂心。到了洞府以后，你自然会明白。说完，师徒三人又继续再走。刚要入殿，一批香客又来到寺门。其中，有个循洲巡检林愿，带着夫人,家丁，来观音殿进香口观音看这些人入殿以后，立即化身人座，受人香火。只听林夫人祈求说：大慈大悲观世音菩萨，我林家生了一男四女，不幸长男得呆痴病，怕将来香火无人继，求观音再赐男儿一人好接香火。如能答应，我林家一定多多施舍，普救世人。林愿陪夫人上香后，就带夫人回去了。不多久，香客都走了，观音对龙女说：龙女贤徒，林家世代好善，为人慈悲，这次亲来求嗣，师父只好答应。后日，你就投胎他家，了结这个缘份，收伏妖魔，替天行道口龙女听后。正要再问时，观音又说：这是天意，不必再问，你去吧！龙女听一了，只好拜了观音，同善财走出佛殿。龙女对善财说：师父要我下凡，收伏妖魔，替天行道。只怕我成了凡间俗人，无法完成这个大业。善财听了说：你安心去。到时，我会去凡间助你一臂之力。再说，林夫人去观音阁上香后就有孕了。又过了许多日，林夫人就要分娩了。府里个个忙忙碌碌，大家都在等林夫人早生贵子口也是这一天，龙女到了下凡日子，就辞别观音，同善财驾着云雾，朝着林家飞去。一道红光闪后，轰隆一声如山崩。林家一个丫头匆忙忙地对林愿说：夫人生了千金。林愿听后，心里一十分不乐，在厅里走来走去。这时，门外林家前前后后，红光闪闪。大家以为失火，都赶去救火。但到了林家一看，不但不见火星，而且沿路清香扑鼻。等大家问明情况后，才知道林夫人生了个千金。于是，大家朝林夫人道了喜后，各自回去了。本来，家里添丁，是件喜事。却因林夫人又生了第五个千金，林愿心里几分不乐。再说这小女生下满月了，不笑不哭，林愿认为是个哑巴，决定将她抛弃野外口一天，林愿趁夫人不注意，偷偷地把小女带出家门，来到一处偏僻山岗，正要丢下时，对面来了一个道士，口里唱：救人一命，胜造一七级浮屠啊！林愿听了，心想：这道士莫非有什么话要说？就开口问：师傅有何指点？那道士说：这小女有什么罪过，要把她丢在野外呢？林愿答：这小女生下满月至今不笑不哭，将来一定是哑巴。故此好吧，你来看，她要是能说话，我就带回扶养，如果不会说话，就交给你带走。好吧！道士说完，对着小女说了几句什么，小女就晰晰呀呀地又说又笑。林愿见了，觉得惊奇，就辞别了道士，抱着小女，转身一看，那道士已经走得无痕无影了。后人说，那道士正是善财化身来点度龙女的。林愿回家后，就给这个奇怪的女儿取了个奇怪的名字林默。这个林默，就是后来人们常说的海神妈祖。据泥洲志和台湾林氏大宗记载，妈祖姓林名默，世居莆田贤良港。父林愿，五代闽时，官都巡检，母王氏生一男五女。宋建隆元年庚辰三月二十三日生第六女，弥月不闻啼声，因此名默。七岁授学，悉解文义。十岁涌经礼佛。十二岁，有道匕玄通授以玄微秘法。十五岁能为人治病。并常渡海至泪洲救助海卜遇难渔,船民。宋雍熙四年九月九日，成道于泪洲岛，年二十有八。妈祖一生乐于救助海难。深受民众祟敬。白一姓为纪念她的功德，于937年在泥洲岛上立庙奉祀，至今已有千年。明时，航海家郑和两次奉旨来到渭洲拜祭并扩建庙宇。清康熙统一台湾后，下旨对妈祖庙进行大规模的扩建，妈祖庙遂有海上龙官之称。自宋以来,妈祖先后被救封二十八次。宋宣和五年封顺济夫人，绍熙元年封妃爵，元至正十八年救封天妃，清康熙炭十三年封天后，民国十八年国民政府内政部命令各省保存妈祖庙，改称林孝女祠，故妈祖有天妃,天后,天上圣母之称。如今，妈祖庙宇遍及国内外。仅台湾宝岛就卞庙宇八百多座。外国人称妈祖为海上女神，足见妈祖在海内外之巨大影响。
