广岛蘑菇云。1945年8月6日清晨，似乎仍是与往日一样的平常的一天。日本广岛云气清朗，有些闷热。尖厉的防空警报响起来，但人们并没有显出特别的惊慌。美国飞机频频飞临日本上空，几乎每天都要投下成吨成吨的炸弹，不过广岛还一直没有遭到大的轰炸破坏。警报响过，几架美国飞机在广岛上空盘旋了数周后离开，并没有投掷炸弹。整个城市又恢复了平静。人们没有意识到一场巨大的灾难正悄悄袭来。8时刚过，警报再次响起。很多市民依旧做着自己的事情，没去防空洞。一些人还抬起头看着天上慢慢飞来的3架B－29轰炸机。这种飞机已经连续好几天来到广岛上空盘旋，没有扫射，没有轰炸，好像只是在进行飞行训练。“今天的这3架飞机还会像从前一样飞走的。”人们都这样想着。但这一次，人们想错了！9时14分17秒，当其中一架美机上的瞄准仪对准了广岛一座大桥的正中时，自动装置破打开了。60秒钟后，一颗不同寻常的“炸弹”从打开的舱门落入空中。这时，飞机作了一个155度的转弯，俯冲下来；一瞬间，它的飞行高度下降了300多米。这是一个训练了多次的动作，是为了使飞机尽量远离爆炸地点。45秒钟后，“炸弹”在离地600米的空中爆炸。白光一闪，人们仿佛看到天空中又出现了一颗太阳。令人眼花目眩的白色闪光一瞬即逝，震耳欲聋的大爆炸随即在广岛市中心上空响起。顷刻间，烟尘好像是从地面生长出的一支巨大的蘑菇，云团翻滚，越来越高,越大。地面上竖起了几百根火柱，广岛市陷入了焦热的火海。爆炸的光波使成千上万的人双目失明；10亿度的高温，瞬间把钢铁都熔化得无影无踪；冲击波形成了狂风，所有的建筑物坍塌变成了废墟。在爆炸中心范围的人和物，像原子分离般分崩离析，消失在空气之中。离中心远一点的地方，散落着烧焦了的男人,女人和儿童的残骸。更远一些的地方，有些人虽然侥幸还活着，但不是被严重烧伤，就是双眼被烧成了两个窟窿。强烈射线形成的放射雨使一些人受到了奇异的伤害而缓慢地走向死亡。当时，广岛的人口为34万多人，当日死去的有8万8千多人，负伤和失踪的为5万1千多人。全市7万6千幢建筑物，4万8千幢完全毁坏，2万2千幢严重毁坏。8月7日，日本收听到美国广播，杜鲁门总统说：“7月26日，在波茨坦发出最后通牒旨在拯救日本人民免遭彻底的毁灭，他们的领袖迅速地拒绝了最后通牒。如果他们现在还不接受我们的条件，他们的毁灭将自空中而降……”在美国广播后，日本的陆海军统帅部才接到设在广岛的日本第二军总司令部的报告：“敌人使用了具有从未见过的破坏力的炸弹。”一些人猜测可能是原子弹，有人则表示怀疑。日本军参谋本部决定组成有原子能权威人士参加的调查委员会立即赶赴广岛。调查的结果很快返回，这种新型的炸弹确是原子弹！这一消息马上上报给了天皇。广岛惨烈的悲剧，使得日本高层领导也十分惊慌。为避免动摇人心，引起全国的混乱，他们决定禁止扩散广岛遭原子弹袭击的消息，掩盖广岛事实真相。此时的日本政府内部仍在为是否立即同意接受波茨坦公报的最后通牒，无条件投降而激烈地争论着。他们把最后的希望寄托在苏联出面进行调停。达成日本同反法西斯同盟国的停战。但他们的希望破灭了。8月8日，日本从苏联政府得到的回答是：日本仍在继续进行战争，拒绝波茨坦公告，因此，日本政府请求苏联调停的建议已失去一切根据，苏联政府遵守对联合国的义务，接受联合国的要求，宣布从8月9日起对日宣战。就在苏联出兵的这天上午11时30分，美国又在日本长崎投下了第二颗原子弹。长崎市27万人，当日死去6万余人，成为广岛之后的又一个悲剧。
